About Nishijin Art?

High-resolution textile expression born from tradition and new technology

By placing silk and gold and silver threads in dots, it's possible to create complex color expressions and delicate patterns. The unique technique developed from producing obi (kimono belts) enables the creation of textile expressions as detailed as photographs. Art textiles that can replicate artworks through weaving can be considered a new form of textile beyond traditional Nishijin weaving.

Impressionist painters discovered that by dotting paint on canvas, they could achieve bright color tones visually without the colors mixing and becoming muddy.

Applying this to textiles, by hiding the warp threads and showing only the weft threads, each dot appears in a different color, allowing for realistic and subtle expressions in textile form.

The relentless pursuit of quality led to the discovery of recreating artworks, achieving high-quality craftsmanship in the field.

【Here Lies the Overwhelming Technical Expertise】

Typical Nishijin textiles are woven using 400, 600, or 900 hook Jacquard looms, allowing for finer weaving as the number of squares in a single row of the pattern increases. Even at 1800 hooks, the detail is quite delicate.

1800 hooks mean that across the width of an obi (about 30cm), there are 1800 points where the warp (vertical threads) and weft (horizontal threads) intersect, which is 4 to 9 times more than a typical Nishijin weave. The more points there are, the more delicately colors and smooth lines can be expressed.

With 1800 hooks in 30cm, that's 60 hooks per centimeter... and thus, 6 hooks are used to weave just 1mm. However, Tomiya Textile goes even further, creating works with a technique of 【2700 hooks】.

This 2700 hook technique results in 2700 intersection points across 30cm, 90 per centimeter, meaning 9 hooks are used to weave 1mm.

This is what gives their works such overwhelming expressive power.
